Audi Quattro A2 Ex Group B race car - Privately built with Audi Sport parts
Price 68.000,00 EUR back »
This A2 is one of the very few private ( maybe 4 or 5 ) Group B rally car built. Indeed parts from Audi Sport were so expensive that it was more easy to buy directly a complete ex. Factory race car. It began its life as a bare chassis bought from Audi Sport by Guy Grammet a well known belgian rally driver, building date available from Audi records is 3/12/82. Then it was slowly prepared to Groupe B specifications with some parts from Audi Sport and others especially created. It received the wide wings, modified front end, suspensions, brakes, engine, gear box and axles to race specifications. It was entered in the Belgian rally championship in 1984/85/86 with very good results, against Colsoul, Gaban, Snijers, Bosch ... After the end of Group B it was sold to France where it sparely raced in Rally Cross in 1988 driven by Cathy Caly and in 1990 Patricia Bertapelle. It later went to Spain to race the Spanish gravel rally championship. From the mid 90s it was only used for demonstrations. The A2 is in original condition and was never altered from its group B times and specifications, it’s in working condition and still very quick but considering its potential value and use in future historic Group B events it would require a complete restoration. Driving is very rewarding and sounding is fantastic. It’s a rare opportunity to buy a real period racer Audi Quattro Group B at only a little fraction of a works car cost.

It is not excessive to state that Audi revolutionned the Rally world when the Quattro Coupe was introduiced in competition in 1981 as a Groupe 4, the four wheels drive system bringing a lot of traction. After a first season passed to set the new car, it easily won the Championship in 1982. In 1983 the A1 Group B version appeared, lighter ( 1050 kg ) and quicker ( 360/380 HP ) thanks to the more permissive regulations, in the middle of the season Audi homologated an evolution called A2, it failed to win the championship with 116 points against Lancia 118 points but Hannu Mikkola was titled. In 1984 the A2 evoluted very few as all of the efforts were then concentrated to the new SWB “Sport Quattro”, but it was now a very reliable car and won the three first places at the Monte Carlo, the first win there for Audi, it also need to be said that this year Audi won in Group B, A and N ! Largely dominating with 7 wins Audi and Blomqvist won that year both titles, a kind of end of “Golden Age” as Audi will never win again in Rally, the stunning SWB Sport Quattro will not have the same success as the LWB cars. The Audi winner in Group B is the A2 and not the Sport Quattro even if it was so spectacular.
